Deck Building FAQs, Materials, Cost, Permits & Timeline

Common questions about materials, cost, permits, and timeline. If yours isn’t here, reach out.

Materials &

Durability

Pressure-treated wood warps, splits, and grays. It needs to be stained or sealed every couple of years just to stay functional, and eventually it gets replaced. Composite holds its structure and color without any of that. If you want to go further, PVC has no wood fiber at all. it is completely impervious to moisture, mold, and insects. We build decks meant to be the last one you ever need.

TimberTech composite carries a 25-year fade and stain warranty. With proper installation, composite decks routinely outlast the warranty period and most homeownership cycles. This is not a structure you will be replacing.

Composite will feel warm in direct sun, every outdoor surface does. Lighter colors stay noticeably cooler. If heat is a concern, PVC with cool-touch technology is the upgrade path.

Clean, modern profile, thinner than wood or vinyl, powder-coated in several colors. We bring samples to every consultation.

Process &

Timeline

Every project is different, but here is a general idea: after you approve the design and contract, your municipality typically takes one to two weeks to issue the permit. The build itself usually runs one to two weeks for a standard deck. That said, size, complexity, and scheduling all play a role. Reach out directly and we can give you a more accurate picture for your specific project.

Yes, completely. We submit all applications, plans, and drawings. We coordinate with the municipality throughout the process and are on-site for inspections when needed. You do not interact with the county at all.

Everything. Materials, labor, permits, inspections, fees, design, and cleanup. The number we quote is the number you pay.

Permitting &

Inspections

Yes, in virtually every municipality in North Carolina, a building permit is required for a new deck, regardless of size. Requirements vary by town, but we handle the permit process as part of every project so you do not have to navigate it yourself.

We do, every time. Permit fees are included in your project cost.

Typically a footing inspection, framing inspection, and final inspection. We schedule all of them and are on-site for each one.

Pricing &

Quotes

Every project is different. Cost depends on size, elevation, materials, add-ons, and site conditions. Schedule a free consultation for an accurate number.

Square footage, deck height, material choices, add-ons, site access, and soil conditions.

Not at this time. We're happy to discuss payment structure during the consultation.

Scope &

Service Area

Available as add-ons to a deck build only, not standalone services.

We do offer repair services, though new builds are our primary focus. If your existing framing is in good condition, you may be a candidate for a deck reskin: replacing the decking boards and railing while keeping the structure underneath. It is a great option if the bones are solid. Reach out and we can assess whether repair, reskin, or a full replacement makes the most sense.

Details & More

Composite decking is made from a blend of wood fiber and plastic, encased in a protective polymer cap. It is designed to look like wood without the upkeep. It resists moisture, insects, and fading, and does not need to be stained or sealed. Most composite products carry 25-year or longer warranties.

PVC decking is made entirely from plastic with no wood fiber content. Because of this, it is completely impervious to moisture and will not swell, warp, or rot under any conditions. The color runs all the way through the board, so even deep scratches stay true to color. It is the most durable and low-maintenance decking material available.

We will. While composite and PVC are what we recommend, we understand that some clients prefer wood for budget or aesthetic reasons, and we are happy to accommodate that. We will give you an honest picture of the long-term maintenance involved so you can make the right call for your situation.

A reskin replaces the visible parts of your deck, the decking boards and railing, while keeping the existing framing and structure in place. If your frame is in solid shape, a reskin can give you a like-new deck at a lower cost than a full rebuild. We assess the structure before recommending this option.

Yes. We build year-round, and winter is actually a great time to get on our schedule. Demand tends to be lower between November and February, which typically means better availability and, in some cases, better pricing. If you want your deck ready for spring and summer, starting in winter gets you ahead of the rush.

Nothing. Estimates are completely free. We come out, walk the space with you, talk through your vision, and give you pricing before we leave.

We provide pricing in person, right at your home. For most projects, you will have a number the same day we visit. For larger or more complex builds, we may send the final detailed quote over later that day or the following morning. Either way, you will not be waiting long.

With proper maintenance, including regular staining and sealing, a wood deck can last 15 to 20 years. Without it, particularly in shaded or tree-covered areas where moisture builds up, that timeline can shrink to five years or less. It depends heavily on how much upkeep the homeowner puts in.

Flashing is the metal waterproofing barrier installed where your deck attaches to the house. It directs water away from the ledger board and the home structure, preventing rot and water damage behind the wall. Proper flashing is one of the most important parts of a deck build and is required by most building codes. We install it on every project.

Joist tape is a self-adhesive butyl tape applied to the top of each deck joist before the decking is installed. It seals the surface of the framing from moisture, which dramatically extends the life of the structure underneath. It is a small detail that makes a significant difference over time.
